20/3/06 Unscene Review

This is a great British made video full of British riders, It is produced by Nick Hawker and here he is with a little interview on the DVD for Head-for-the-hills.co.uk:

Name: Nick Hawker

Age: 23

Years riding? About 10 I guess, maybe 6 if you don't count the cross-country years

Years Making Videos? I've been playing around with video for several years, but nothing serious. Then last year I felt that if it was something I was going to carry on with, I should really try and step things up a level and make a full length commercial film

Why did you make this video? For several reasons. As I said, I was very keen to make a full length 'proper' bike video. I think that was the starting point. I also felt there wasn't a video out that really captured riding in the UK; the Earthed series is great, but there are only ever a couple of UK scenes. From going out riding and racing around the UK I knew there was a wealth of talent out there that was currently going unseen... And as you can probably guess, the rest of the idea kind of fell together from there...!

What's different between this video any most other biking vids? I think you can relate to unscene, I think you recognise the riding on the DVD as the type of riding you go out and do with your mates. And I think its that connection that gives the film its feel good factor and inspires you to get out on your bike and ride. I think that by not going and filming the big 'names', we managed to capture that energy and excitement that you don't always see in films these days. Without exception, every rider who features in unscene gave it their all when we went out filming and that comes across on the screen.

And the music on unscene is loads better than most other videos, and I'm not going to be shy about saying that!! Hamish went through pretty much the same process sourcing the music as we did finding the riders. It wasn't a case of going through his Dads record collection and ripping off some cheesy rock. Instead, he went out there and found some of the best up and coming talented UK artists. As with the riders, some of them you'll of heard of before, some of them you won't, but they all give it their best!

How did the charity contribution come about? Well, from the start it was never about trying to do something to make money for ourselves; you're not going to make a million with mountain bike films! We made unscene because we wanted to make the film, and thought if it made any money, then that could go to something more worthwhile.

Finally what's your favourite sandwich? At the moment its a bacon and egg bloomer at about 9:30 in the morning.

Anything else you want to add? I would like to say thanks to everyone who helped make unscene happen. To all the riders, thanks for taking us seriously, getting up early and riding till late, riding the same section over and over again because I forgot to press record, that kind of thing! Thanks for pushing yourselves to give us the best shots, and the best crash footage.

Thanks to all the sponsors to, for believing in what we were doing and putting up the cash to help make it happen; Burgec, TF Tuned, howies, DMR, Silverfish UK, Wades Cycles, epic clothing, you guys are great!

And thanks to all our friends and family for giving us the support we needed to do this thing happen. To Tom and Hamish for taking shit from me, to Alistair for sorting out our online presence and to everyone who made it down to the launch party before Christmas. Cheers guys!
